Here’s a little fun fact about new parents: the level of craziness in their lives is almost always determined by the state of their diaper bag.

If it’s messy and everything’s all over the place, they’re probably having one of their more hectic days.

If it’s tidy and things are nicely positioned, then maybe it’s one of those days where they can take a breather.

In any case, the state of a parent’s diaper bag can be telling.

Despite diaper bags being a necessity for many parents who have young children, they can be a disappointment at times.

From bad designs to poor ergonomics and other features that simply fall short, there’s a lot of things that can make a diaper bag a parent’s worst enemy.

For this reason, some moms have gotten into using a backpack as a diaper bag, and it’s nothing short of a miracle!

Here’s why.

Using a Backpack as a Diaper Bag

Nothing exposes a diaper bag’s weakness like an active toddler.

The moment your babies start running around and doing all sorts of acrobatic movements that get you running after them is when you’ll realize that an ordinary diaper bag will no longer do.

It’s restricting and doesn’t really allow you the use of both hands, which is absolutely essential when looking after very mobile children.

Here are a few important reasons to use a backpack as a diaper bag:

1. Provides Safety and Comfort

Backpacks are generally safer to use than regular diaper bags since they leave both of your hands free.

You’re going to need both those hands to grab onto your child’s shirt as they try to move away from you and get you to catch them.

In this way, you won’t really have a problem securing a hold on your little one and changing their diapers or wiping their hands.

Running around with a fully packed diaper bag is neither safe nor comfortable.

At the very least, you’re going to have to leave it somewhere before running after your child, which isn’t really the best decision either.

We love our kids and don’t really mind running after them to get them to change their diapers.

This is what makes parenting fun and is part of the experience of bonding with a young, active child.

Choose a backpack as your diaper bag for a day at the playground or the mall, so that when you do need to do some running, your body won’t really mind it at all.

2. Somebody Else Can Wear It

Your husband might not mind carrying a cute diaper bag for you, but in most cases, you’d probably need to ask him first before he does.

While that’s not going to be a problem if you don’t forget to make that request or he remembers to take the bag from you, it’s probably not going to happen because none of you would be able to do any of those things.

Your husband’s going to think of that unspoken rule of the diaper bag being your property, and you’re probably going to be too busy to ask him to carry it anyway.

Enter the backpack.

When using a backpack as a diaper bag, you’re going to want your husband to volunteer one of his bags.

In this way, your man would automatically want to carry it, and you’d be spared from the extra effort of bearing a fully loaded bag.

3. Keeps Your Bag on You

One issue with using a diaper bag is that it’s not great for running around.

You’re going to need to leave it someplace safe or ask someone to watch it for you before you can go and run off after your child.

There are quite a few reasons why this isn’t such a good idea:

  • The person you asked to watch your bag may not have been paying attention (you’re all busy, after all)
  • You could have placed some valuables in your bag; in which case, it would not be a good idea to leave it behind with or without anyone keeping watch over it
  • You don’t want to be running around with a diaper in your hand

One of the best things about using a backpack instead of a diaper bag is that you can keep it on you at all times.

It’s comfortable and doesn’t really hurt your back too much (granted that you’ve chosen a quality backpack) and is pretty easy to grab and secure on your back when you suddenly need to break into a run towards your kid.

4. Has the Features You Need for Organization

There is such a thing as the diaper bag backpack, and if you’ve heard of it but still opted to use the regular travel backpack, then you probably already know where we’re coming from.

If you haven’t, then we’re happy to break the news to you.

The backpack version of diaper bags, as great as they are, are not necessarily the best when it comes to organization.

Yes, they’re comfortable, you can wear them on your back, and they keep your hands free.

However, the question is: are they convenient?

As of this point, these bags are really 50-50; they can work for some parents but fall short for others.

At the end of the day, you really don’t want to risk it, which is why you should go for the safer pick: the travel backpack.

5. You Already Have It

Unlike the diaper bag backpack or the regular diaper bag, which you still need to purchase, a travel backpack is something you likely already have lying around the house.

If you and your husband are an active couple who loves going on treks and hikes, then you probably have an excellent bag candidate for a diaper bag.

Raising kids is expensive, and you want to save as much as you can for their future.

Instead of dishing out cash on a pricey diaper bag backpack, you can use a travel backpack you already own and save your money instead.

These bags are more comfortable, provide a lot of space, and will prevent you from breaking the bank.

6. Great for Traveling with Kids

Whether or not you’ve traveled a lot in your life, you probably know how traveling benefits a person’s health and well-being.

Seeing the world helps your kids become healthier, better-rounded individuals, and come even closer to achieving their full potential.

Starting your kids young is going to require you to bring a dependable diaper bag, which is certainly not going to be the regular diaper bag.

A travel backpack is something you can use as a diaper bag because it’s comfortable, convenient, and makes it easier for you to change your kids’ diapers while on the go.

7. Gets You More Involved

The thing about bringing a diaper bag to the playground or the mall is that you’re probably going to need to keep watch over it most of the time.

Yes, your kids are out there socializing with their peers, but it would be great if you could somehow become more involved in their day.

You probably won’t think much about the situation and continue to watch over the bag that has your phone and other valuables, not knowing that you could be keeping your child from experiencing a priceless bonding moment with you.

A backpack used as a diaper bag shouldn’t make you think twice about approaching your child and asking them what’s going on.

It shouldn’t prevent you from having more precious interactions with your little one as they enjoy themselves on the playground.

If anything about their surroundings sparks their curiosity, then you’d be able to answer their questions and provide them with guidance right then and there.

8. More Durable

Diaper bags usually go through hell and back, and we’re not kidding.

These bags endure the worst of the worst and usually end up needing to be replaced within a few months (or just weeks!).

This certainly isn’t going to be the case with travel backpacks.

When you choose a premium backpack made of high-quality materials, you’ll have a bag that lasts long, is easy to clean, and organizes your baby’s stuff to perfection.

Final Thoughts

Parents have quickly realized the benefits of using their backpacks as diaper bags.

Not only are these bags safer and more comfortable, but they also hold features that are ideal for organizing baby clothes and supplies.

How great a backpack performs will usually depend on the quality of the pack, so make sure to choose a good one.
